The Canyon View Residence is located on a hillside in Bel Air, California, within a small, gated community. With thoughtful planning and design study, the spacious residence was articulated in a manner to promote indoor/outdoor connections, warmth, and views to the serene surroundings canyons. The west and north elevations facing the canyons are very open, using a combination of stone clad forms and metal screens to provide articulation and shading. Covered patio decks were located on the north and west corners of the home to allow the residents to enjoy clear views of the surrounding natural canyons while still limiting the amount of sun glare that enters the house. Large multi-panel operable sliding doors are used to help encourage the connection between the indoors and outdoors by allowing the outdoors to extend in. The east and south side of the residence look onto a private road and motor court which called for translucent glass, high windows, and more solid wall surfaces to address privacy and security for these elevations. A long curving concrete wall on the east side of the property, facing the road, provides separation and additional security. The concrete wall was incorporated with the architecture of the house and site design, tying the two together, as one. The pool, located on the northeast side of the site, breaks through the concrete wall, creating interest and a means to articulate the wall and connect to the entire site.
