2015 - Schematic Design Phase
The Orange Court project is located in Bel Air, California, in a middle flat portion of a hillside community. The goals were to create a modern spacious home, that has an indoor/outdoor connection while maintaining a low profile to not obscure the views of the surrounding properties. With thoughtful planning and design study, the residence was articulated in a manner to contain all the programmatic requests and maintain a pleasant scale. The use of large multi-panel operable sliding doors in the design encourages the residence to extend the outdoors in. Covered patio decks and cantilevered roof overhangs were utilized to protect the large window openings and articulate the elevations. A curving wall begins to wrap the northeast side of the residence, where a private road is found, to create privacy all around the front elevation of the home. The east side of the property successfully utilizes trees and landscaping to maintain some privacy from views into pool area and back yard from the private road while still allowing the residents ample views of the serene surrounding canyons. The use of different exterior materials such as plaster, stone cladding and metal panels throughout the house breaks up the mass of the residence as well as provides articulation and shading. Through careful planning and design, the goals set forth for this canyon home were met and will allow the homeowners to enjoy the Southern California climate.
