This Toluca Estate project is an addition to an existing French Countyesque style residence located in Toluca Lake. Through well thought out contemporary design strategies three new spaces were designed that contained an open contemporary feel, but still maintained a connection with the existing style of the residence. A covered patio spans between the dining room and master bedroom wings of the existing house. The simple smooth plastered elevation connects the two wings, unifying the rear elevation in a contemporary way, yet still blending in with the existing architecture style. The covered patio consists of high ceilings with exposed wood rafters that allow diffused natural light to enter the house and enriching the visual character of the patio and maintain a clear view to the backyard. A fire is aligned to the center to the pool and clad with the same brick used on the existing front entrance of the home. An outdoor kitchen with a trellis with 4x4 wood slats is placed adjacent to the existing garage. The kitchen is placed within a new plastered niche and a large granite clad island is located in front of the cooking line. The outdoor fireplace seating nook is located in front of the dining room and provides a viewing focal point from the interior. By utilizing modern forms and some rustic finishes, the new additions were able to unify and enhance the rear elevation of the existing home, all while creating a very comfortable space to relax and enjoy.
